Colombia is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in South America
AAA Adventures is a startup created by us: Three entrepreneurs determined to do something for our environment. For many years, the volatile security situation made it difficult to enjoy our native Colombia. But this didn’t stop us from trying: From the North Coast to the Amazon, and from the Pacific to the Orinoquía, we embarked on journeys that opened our eyes to the beauty of Colombia.
It is no secret that Colombia is one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in South America. As the second most biodiverse country in the world, Colombia is blessed with natural riches, variety, geographical beauty and diverse ecosystems.
This land that Colombians refer to as “paradise” is home to more than 54,871 species, including more than 1,900 bird species (of which 79 are endemic), 1,500 plants, 367 endemic amphibians (unique to Colombia), 115 reptiles, 34 mammals and 1,543 orchids. Colombia also has 32 terrestrial biomes and 314 different types of ecosystems. In the páramos region, these systems account for just 1.7% of Colombian territory but supply water to 70% of the population.
These characteristics undoubtedly make Colombia the perfect ecotourism destination. However, our country and our people have faced many problems that have prevented us from taking advantage of these opportunities.
Even though the country has begun to make progress – in particular by creating reserves to protect ecosystems – problems persist due to illegal mining and other activities that have a devastating effect on the environment.
Following the peace agreement in Colombia, we wanted to do something to help safeguard our ecosystems from illegal exploitation by some local communities. The result was the launch of high-end tourism experiences that help us protect species and their habitats, transforming Colombia into a sustainable ecotourism destination.
Initially, we have seven tourist experiences based on birdwatching, sport fishing and wildlife.
1,900-plus bird species – 20% of the world’s total – makes Colombia one of the best destinations for birdwatching on the planet. The country’s diverse ecosystems means a professional birdwatcher could get to see 450 birds in just one tour.
Birdwatching in Colombia is an unforgettable experience that we urge you to enjoy! Although just one single tour is not enough to watch all 1,900 bird species in Colombia, we suggest you begin by exploring the eastern, western and central regions of the Andes mountain range. We also suggest trips to the birding hotspots of the Magdalena Valley, the mountains of Santa Marta and the magnificent La Guajira.
